Answer-first content: the format AI engines actually cite

Every AI citation audit I've run has the same finding: the sites that get cited answer the question in the first two or three sentences. The sites that don't, however well-written, bury the answer under a narrative lead. Here's how to fix that without making your content read like a robot wrote it.

1. Lead with the answer, not the setup

Traditional blog structure builds context, then arrives at the point. AI extraction models favor the opposite: state the direct answer first, then use the rest of the section to support and qualify it. This isn't about removing nuance, it's about sequencing it.

2. One question, one section

Articles that answer three related questions in one flowing narrative are harder for retrieval systems to parse cleanly. Breaking each distinct question into its own clearly headed section makes each one independently citable.

3. Back the answer with a credentialed author

Author schema and a visible bio aren't cosmetic. On the Northline project, adding real author credentials alongside the rewrite was one of the two changes most strongly associated with new citations appearing.

4. Don't sacrifice readability for extraction

The goal isn't robotic, keyword-stuffed answers. A direct opening sentence followed by natural, well-written supporting paragraphs reads better for humans and performs better for AI citation, the two aren't in tension.
