Tracking AI citations: a practical guide

A citation-tracking log, the closest thing to a rank tracker for AI search today

There's no Search Console for AI citations, at least not yet. Every client asking "are we showing up in ChatGPT" gets the same honest answer from me: nobody has a perfect tool for this, but a disciplined manual process gets you a real, repeatable baseline. Here's the process I use.

1. Build a fixed question set

Pick 10-20 real questions your buyers ask, phrased the way a person would ask them, not as keywords. This set stays fixed month to month so movement is actually comparable.

2. Query each AI system the same way, every time

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity each get the same question set, logged in a fresh session with no prior context, to avoid personalization skewing the result.

3. Log citation, not just mention

Being named in passing is different from being the cited source of the direct answer. I track both, but only the latter counts toward a real citation win.

4. Pair it with GA4 referral segmentation

Citation logging tells you visibility. GA4 referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar sources tells you whether that visibility is converting into actual visits.

Takeaway

A fixed question set, consistent querying, citation vs. mention logging, and GA4 referral tracking, together they're the closest thing to a rank tracker AI search has right now.
